Traveling to Mexico from Texas for Dia de Los Muertos ( Day of the Dead ) - suggestions, tips?

I'm traveling to Mexico near the end of October and would appreciate any advice or suggestions from other travelers about great places to experience Dia de Los Muertos. I will be driving from Texas, so do you know of anything that is reasonable driving time and distance? I have heard amazing things about the Island of Janitzio, but I won't be able to make it that far south.
