How the doctors diagnose Bipolar disorder?

My parents suspect that my 14 year old brother has bipolar disorder. they tought his beahvior was due to his adolescence but his depression, mood swings are getting worse. If they go to the doctor how will they know what is wrong with him. Do they do some kind of test; perhaps a MRI. Will a psychiatrist help. Any body with any advice
