How do you know where to put a Spanish accent mark on a vowel?

I know you're suppose to put one where ever the vowel is a little stressed like in the word "esta" and "est� " but some Spanish words have accents like the word "Tu" and "T� " sound the same, but the other has an accent! Am I suppose to find a way to memorize in which words the accent goes or just guess?
